1. For those who don’t know you, would you please tell us a little bit about yourself?
My name is Jan, I’m 26 years old and I come from Hamburg in Germany. Currently I’m studying Communication Design at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences. To finance my studies, I work as a freelance web and graphic designer.
Before that, I’ve completed training as a digital media designer and worked as a web designer.
I realized quite early that I would like to do something creative. Since I was little, I’ve been interested in drawing and when I turned 13 I started to become interested in graffiti. Later I discovered the Internet as a medium for expressing myself.

Ich bin Jan, 26 Jahre alt und komme aus Hamburg in Deutschland. Ich studiere zur Zeit Kommunikationsdesign an der HAW in Hamburg. Um mein Studium zu finanzieren arbeite ich als Freiberuflicher Web und Grafikdesigner. Ich habe bereits eine Ausbildung zum Mediengestalter gemacht und als Webdesigner gearbeitet.
Mir war schon recht früh klar, dass ich etwas Gestalterisches machen möchte. Schon als ich klein war, interessierte ich mich fürs Zeichnen und mit 13 Jahren fing ich an mich für Graffiti zu interessieren. Später habe ich dann das Medium Internet für mich entdeckt.
2. What are your main skills and how did you learn them?
I like creative work with paper and pencil; it helps me finding a concept or idea. Although working on a computer has lots of advantages, I still think that it can also restrict you quite a lot.
When working on a computer, I use a mix of Fireworks, Photoshop and Illustrator. I learned the basics for working with these programs during my digital media design training. Later I taught myself HTML and CSS. Before, I used to do lots of Flash projects, but given time I gradually specialized more on jQuery.

Mir gefällt das gestalterische und kreative Arbeiten mit Stift und Papier. Es hilft mir, ein Konzept oder eine Idee zu finden. Obwohl das Arbeiten am Computer seine Vorteile hat, denke ich, dass der Computer einen auch stark einschränken kann.
Am Computer arbeite ich mit einer Mischung aus Fireworks, Photoshop und Illustrator. Die Grundlagen für das Arbeiten mit diesen Programmen habe ich bei meiner Ausbildung gelernt. HTML/CSS habe ich mir dann später selber beigebracht. Früher habe ich eine Menge Flash-Projekte gemacht, mit der Zeit habe ich mich aber mehr auf jQuery spezialisiert.
3. Which part of your work do you like most and why?
I like to experiment with different designs and techniques and to discover new possibilities. The Internet is constantly changing and there are a lot of things to discover and to learn.

Mir gefällt es, mit verschieden Designs und Techniken zu experimentieren und neue Möglichkeiten zu entdecken. Das Internet ist ständig im Wandel und es gibt eine Menge Dinge zu erforschen und zu lernen.
4. Could you tell us something about some recent projects of yours that you really enjoyed doing?
One project I really liked was the relaunch of the Roy Robson website. Roy Robson is an international lifestyle brand for men’s fashion. The website was created during my employment at EOS-UPTRADE, a web agency in Hamburg. It was very nice to work with the client and I was able to contribute many of my own ideas to the layout and concept.

Ein Projekt, dass mir besonders gefallen hat, war der Relaunch der Roy Robson-Webseite. Roy Robson ist eine internationale Lifestyle-Marke für Männermode. Die Webseite ist während meiner Arbeitszeit bei EOS-UPTRADE entstanden. Es war sehr angenehm, mit dem Kunden zusammenzuarbeiten und ich konnte viele eigene Ideen in das Layout und die Konzeption einbringen.
5. Of all projects you’ve ever done, which one are you most proud of?
That’s a difficult question. Mostly I’m never 100% satisfied with my work. What I like most is probably my own website janploch.de, because I didn’t have any specifications to follow and was just able to do what I felt like doing.

Das ist eine schwere Frage. Meistens bin ich mit meinen Arbeiten nie 100% zufrieden.
Am besten gefällt mir wohl meine eigene Webseite janploch.de, da ich hier keine Vorgaben hatte und einfach machen konnte, worauf ich Lust hatte.
6. What keeps you interested in your work and why?
I simply love my job. I always try to improve myself in what I’m doing.

Ich liebe einfach meinen Job. Ich versuche immer besser zu werden in dem was ich mache.
7. What inspires you to come up with great new designs and illustrations?
I draw inspiration from my environment, e.g. posters, magazines, packagings and so on. In my sketchbook I collect things I especially like. I find newspapers, for example, to be a good source for new ideas regarding layout grids for web design.

Ich lasse mich von vielen Dingen in meiner Umwelt inspirieren, z.B. Poster, Zeitschriften, Verpackungen, etc. Dinge die mir besonders gefallen, sammle ich in einem Skizzenbuch. Zeitungen z.B. eignen sich meiner Meinung nach sehr gut, um neue Ideen für Gestaltungsraster im Webdesign zu finden.
8. Please tell us a bit about your personal method or process for building great websites.
Most of the time I draw a few quick sketches on paper first. Sometimes I also use Balsamiq Mockups to show concept and structure of the website. When concept and structure are done, I use Photoshop or Fireworks to work on the design until I and the client are both happy with it (unfortunately that’s not always possible), then I implement the layout in HTML and CSS. With jQuery or Flash I add interactive content to the website. After that is done, I choose a suitable CMS together with the client.

Meistens mache ich erstmal ein paar schnelle Skizzen auf dem Papier. Manchmal benutze ich auch Balsamiq Mockups, um das Konzept und den Aufbau der Webseite darzustellen. Wenn das Konzept und der grobe Aufbau fertig sind, arbeite ich in Photoshop oder Fireworks am Design. Daran arbeite ich so lange, bis ich und der Kunde zufrieden sind (das ist leider nicht immer möglich). Dann setze ich die Layouts in HTML/CSS um. Mit jQuery oder Flash füge ich dann oft noch interaktive Inhalte ein. Je nach Projekt wähle ich dann zusammen mit dem Kunden ein passendes CMS aus.
9. What was the website that impressed you most when you first saw it?
I think that was the Carsonified website. I love the illustrative style and the typography of Mike Kus!

10. Please share some tips with our trainees on how to give their website as unique and creative a style as your website.
- You should be open for new concepts and ideas. Not every website needs a big header or a sidebar.
- A lot of inspiration can be drawn from outside the web and the web design galleries.
- By using your own drawings, illustrations or hand-drawn typography you can give your websites a special touch.
- Still, you should never forget the website users and their goals and needs.

- Man sollte aufgeschlossen sein für neue Konzepte und Ideen. Nicht jede Webseite braucht einen großen Kopfbereich oder eine Sidebar.
- Inspiration kann man sich oft auch außerhalb des Web und der Webdesign-Galerien holen.
- Durch die Verwendung von eigenen Zeichnungen, Illustrationen oder handgezeichneten Schriften können Webseiten einen eigenen Look bekommen.
- Man sollte dabei aber nie die Nutzer der Webseite und deren Ziele und Bedürfnisse vergessen.
