A market based technique like SEO, for example, isn’t based on jingles. It’s based on real science. So is everything else in online marketing, and that’s where you need to start getting selective about what you learn, and where you learn it.
It’s almost impossible to move online without finding some new ad for a “trick” for online marketing. This is the new frontier for exploitation of the gullible, and this worthless garbage, if nothing else, is a good definition of everything to avoid in online marketing.
It’s misrepresentation.
A market based technique like SEO, for example, isn’t based on jingles. It’s based on real science. So is everything else in online marketing, and that’s where you need to start getting selective about what you learn, and where you learn it.
Online marketing fundamentals
The visible element of online marketing is quite deceptive, in fact it’s sometimes quite misleading. This material varies from the strange little “classifieds” of Google ads to flashy, glitzy and sometimes pretty irritating popups. These are ads, not marketing in the true sense of the word.
They’re just part of the marketing story. Real marketing is actually based on a range of principles and sciences, not just ads and visual merchandising.
Marketing, to start with, includes all facets of the process of marketing.
This includes:
- Market research
- Advertising and promotions
- Merchandising
- Market positioning
- Pricing strategies
- Market placement
Of these, there are four primary principles known as the “Four Ps” of conventional marketing, which still hold good online:
- Product
- Price
- Placement
- Promotion
These are the evolutionary steps in marketing, starting with the product, defining the costs and pricing, establishing the market position and defining the promotion requirements.
Now…does that sound like the “easy online marketing” scam? Obviously not.
If you want a real career in marketing, you need to study and qualify with reputable organizations. Then you can develop your new skills and get the expertise you need.
Learning from the experts
Online marketing just happens to be the most complex form of marketing in history. If you want to do online marketing you will need:
- Basic conventional marketing qualifications: You can’t really work effectively in the industry without them. After you get these skills you can develop them and tailor them to suit your needs, but they are essential.
- Search engine optimization training and understanding: This isn’t optional, it’s critical. SEO is a primary driver of market success, and it’s vital at the operational levels of marketing.
Developing your marketing skills
This is a case where “learning” is an open-ended experience. Everyone learns in online marketing, including the experts. The difference is that the experts have the knowledge to develop their learning and teach efficiently.
In marketing, expertise also includes individual skills. “Marketing gurus”, meaning the real experts who have credibility and respect in the industry itself, and absolutely nobody else, provide a range of extra insights and capabilities for marketers.
Like any media-based industry, marketing is a fluid, flexible thing. No two products are the same. As a professional marketer, your own marketing will be unique.
This isn’t exactly a dull career. If you want to be at the forefront of the internet, this is where it happens. Consider your options.
